Longfin finalist at Jackson Hole
16/10/07

“Longfin,” the film by Lindsey Davidson and Melissa Salpietra (Class of 2005/06) was selected as one of three finalists in the Marion Zunz Best Newcomer Award at the 2007 Jackson Hole International Wildlife Film Festival. This is the biggest festival on the calendar in North America and it is the second time one of our student films has been a finalist for the newcomer award (“Under their Skin” by Will Clark and Melissa Pentecost was a finalist in 2005 – the festival being held every two years).
It is worth noting that the “newcomer award” is not targetted at student project films, such as these, but at large-scale commercial productions from director/producers at the start of their careers. As such, “Longfin” was up up against films with budgets many more times greater than theirs and with the backing of large production houses.
In the event, “Longfin” did not get the award – but just getting selected was a HUGE achievement for what is effectively “homework”. Lindsey and Melissa are to be congratulated (along with their EP: Steve Downes) on a very fine film that holds its own in the commercial world. One has only to look at the awards and honours this film has already achieved, to realize that the film – and Lindsey and Melissa – were already winners.
