Jinty MacTavish off to Greenland
07/08/07

Jinty MacTavish from the Class of 2006/07 leaves tomorrow for the UK and Greenland with a group of three filmmaking students from Otago Girls’ High School. The trip is the major prize from the Royal Society of New Zealand’s (RSNZ) “Big Science Adventure” Competition, which they run in association with our filmmaking programme and which is funded largely by sponsorship from the Freemasons.
Teams of filmmakers from New Zealand Secondary Schools initially competed by making a 5-minute film on some aspect of global warming. From the films, six finalists were determined. Each of the six finalist teams then had a student from our programme assigned to it as a mentor. The teams were given a crash course in filmmaking at the University of Otago and had to make another film over a four-day period. The Otago Girls’ High School team’s film “Spottie: the Difference” was judged to be best and, as a consequence, they, their teacher, and their mentor (Jinty) get to go to Greenland and England.
During the trip, Jinty will take charge of making a documentary on some aspect of the trip and global warming. She will be helped by her crew of budding filmmakers from Otago Girls’ High.
